Sagrantino is a rare Italian grape varietal coming from the region of Umbria. These grapes are extremely sought after and produce top quality wines that are powerful, very structured and complex, with some of the most assertive tannins in the world of wine. There are only 24 acres of Sagrantino grapes planted in the U. S. with 3 acres of those right here at Airola Road Vineyards. Several award winning Sagrantino wines have come from our vineyard and sell for upwards of $100 per bottle.

Our Varietals

“The secret to great wine starts in the vineyard. You can make poor-quality wine out of high
quality grapes, but you can never make great wine from poor quality grapes. At Airola Road
Vineyards, we produce high quality grapes that produce great, award winning wines. Our exceptional vines make extraordinary wines”

Sagrantino
Syrah

Syrah is a big-bodied, dry red wine that tends to shine its brightest on the opening palate. Not only is Syrah flavor-packed, but it’s also one of the darkest colored inky wines you can find. Deep purple in hue with not much translucency, Syrah’s violet and velvety elegance is backed by big fruit and crunchy spice.

Airola Road Vineyards produces some of the most sought-after Syrah grapes in California. Wines produced from our Syrah grapes have won numerous awards including “Best In Class”, “Double Gold” and “Gold”.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is a white wine grape variety native to Burgundy, France. It’s currently the most popular white wine grape variety in the world and can have a diverse flavor profile depending on where it’s grown and if oak is used during the aging process.

Chardonnay has one of the widest-ranging tasting and aromatic profiles of any grape variety, both red and white. That’s because the taste of Chardonnay is heavily influenced by the climate and terroir it’s grown in, ripeness at harvest, and methods of aging.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is a red wine grape variety and is the most widely grown red wine grape variety in the world. Its wines were recently ranked as the most searched and sought after in the world. It can form a full-bodied, complex, fruit-forward and dry wine when vinified correctly. Our Sierra Foothill wine region is not as well know for Cabernet wines, however don't let our obscurity fool you! Our outstanding grapes consistently produce award winning, top quality Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Our recent 2018 vintage won “Double Gold” at the San Francisco  Chronicle wine competition.

Barbera

This Italian varietal produces very deep red color wines with fruitful rich flavors such as strawberry, raspberry and hints of sour cherry. Barbera wines range from medium to full body and produce excellent tasting wines.

Grenache

Grenache is a black grape varietal used to produce both lean and medium-bodied, black and blue fruit-forward red wines. Grenache is a fun grape variety in that it’s spicy, grounded with soft tannins, fruit-forward and medium-bodied. This allows for wines to be paired with an endless assortment of food.

Like its Spanish cousin Tempranillo, Grenache wines have a lower viscosity and typically maintain a black cherry and red garnet color in the glass, while being aromatic with strawberry and plum on the nose. Wines produced from our Grenache grapes have won “Double Gold” at the San Francisco Chronicle wine competition.

“I have been making wine with the grapes from Airola Road Vineyards since 2007. The vineyard,
which was expertly planted by Steve Collum, the vineyard pioneer of Calaveras County, has
always been well maintained and cared for, producing luscious fruit that becomes award
winning wine. For my own label, Vina Moda, as well as Villa Vallecito Vineyards, we have won
numerous “Best In Class” titles both in California, Nationally and Internationally. With its
Mediterranean climate and cool breezes from the New Melones Reservoir, the fruit comes off
the vine evenly ripened and nutrient dense, creating wines with depth of flavor and color”.
